Hypertension is defined based on an average of up to three systolic and diastolic blood pressure measurements taken using an oscillometric protocol as a measured systolic blood pressure greater than or equal to 130 mm Hg, a measured diastolic blood pressure greater than or equal to 80 mm Hg, or currently taking a medication to lower high blood pressure. Pregnant women aged 20–44 years were excluded from the analysis. Estimates were age adjusted by the direct method to the 2000 U.S. Census population using the age groups 20–39, 40–59, and 60 and over.
