Number of medical files opened by the SAMU in France 2017-2022
In 2022, the French SAMU (Urgent Medical Aid Service) opened 15.9 million medical regulatory files. Any call the SAMU receives opens a regulatory file, which becomes a medical file as soon as an act of medical regulation is made. That year, the French SAMU (Urgent Medical Aid Service) picked up over 29.7 million phone calls.
The mission of the emergency medical aid service (SAMU) is to respond by medical means to emergency situations, to ensure permanent medical attention, to determine and trigger the most appropriate response. Calls handled in the context of on-call care, as well as the answers provided by the regulating doctor, are subject to a traceability requirement according to procedures set by order of the Minister of Health.
