SAMU regulatory files recorded in France

In 2021, the French SAMU (Urgent Medical Aid Service) registered 17.7 million regulatory files. Any call the SAMU receives opens a regulatory file, as long as the call relates to a medical, medico-social, or health problem. That year, the French SAMU (Urgent Medical Aid Service) picked up over 26 million phone calls.

The mission of the emergency medical aid service (SAMU) is to respond by medical means to emergency situations, to ensure permanent medical attention, to determine and trigger the most appropriate response. Calls handled in the context of on-call care, as well as the answers provided by the regulating doctor, are subject to a traceability requirement according to procedures set by order of the Minister of Health.

Any call answered by the SAMU leads to the opening of a file. Among all the files created are qualified as a “regulation file” the one that groups together all the information collected, the measures taken, and the follow-up provided, following information of a medical nature, medico-social or health brought to the attention of the call reception and regulation center (examples: search for an on-call pharmacy following a medical prescription, sleep disorder, reoriented social problem to 115). Calls and situations that are not related to a medical, medico-social, or health problem are not counted (false calls, administrative calls, calls hung up without answer, fax tone, maliciousness, hoaxes, misdials, misrouting, personal calls, plus those unrelated to a request of assistance).
