As of July 2021, 37 percent of ships worldwide had already been fitted with ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) or had ordered their installation. The remaining 63 percent of the global fleet was operating without BWTS at that time. By 2024, all of these remaining vessels will need to be retrofitted with BWTS to comply with the 2004 IMO regulation on the management of ballast water and sediments.
