According to a survey conducted across 26 countries in 2023, over 17 percent of international "hallyu" consumers stated that they most strongly associated K-pop with South Korea. K-pop has been the leading associated cultural phenomenon since 2015, with the exception of 2016 when it was secondary to Korean food.

This survey was conducted in the following 26 countries: China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Australia, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Russia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and South Africa.
