Production of wheat in India FY 2022, by major state

In financial year 2022, Uttar Pradesh had the highest production volume of wheat at over 33 million metric tons across India. By contrast, the states of Sikkim and Tripura had a production volume of 100 metric tons respectively in the same period. The overall wheat production was over 107 million metric tons during that year.

Wheat export

Over 2.12 billion U.S. dollars’ worth of wheat was exported from India in 2022. Despite being the world’s third-largest wheat producer, India banned the export of wheat which led to an inflation in wheat prices and other products in the international markets in 2022. The government planned to extend the ban on wheat exports. The leading destination for wheat export was Bangladesh, followed by Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates.

Wheat retail

India’s wheat prices remained persistently high and have only slightly decreased despite several government efforts to reduce the cost of wheat. The retail price of wheat in the market increased by 11 percent. Furthermore, the city of Mumbai had the highest retail price of wheat flour at over 40 Indian rupees per kilogram, higher than the national average.
