The global shipping industry consumed 8.7 exajoules of energy in 2021, all of which came from burning fossil fuels. To meet the net zero targets in 2030, the shipping industry will need to lower its consumption of fossil fuels to an equivalent of 7.6 exajoules and introduce low-carbon marine fuels—such as biofuels, ammonia, and hydrogen—into its energy mix.
