Number of court convictions in France1993-2021, by type of sentence
In 2021, sentences of imprisonment and criminal detention accounted for the majority of sentences handed down in France following convictions. However, with 266,000 such sentences handed down, this was one of the lowest number recorded since 1993, when there were 333,000 in total. In contrast, the number of alternative sentences increased over the same period, from 35,000 in 1993 to 79,000 in 2021.
