In the 30 year span between 1992 and 2022, about 25 journalists were sentenced to prison in India. The majority of journalists, amounting to 18, were arrested on anti-state charges. This was followed by the group of journalists imprisoned under retaliatory charges. Press freedom in India has increasingly been curtailed with the country ranking 150th on the World Press Index in 2022.
