As of January 2023, the United Kingdom and Spain were the European countries with the largest solar and wind capacity under construction, at around 8.6 and 8.3 gigawatts, respectively. The capacity in permitting stages, however, was much higher, amounting to 73.4 gigawatts in the UK, and 76.8 gigawatts in Spain. This is mostly due to the complexity of permitting rules in several of the nations. Meanwhile, as of January 2023, both European countries had announced projects with an additional solar and wind capacity surpassing 20 gigawatts.
