The exposure of banks in the euro area and other EU countries under the single supervisory mechanism to non-performing loans and advances has decreased in 2023. Nevertheless, that exposure was much lower than in 2015. Large banks with assets amounting to over 200 billion euros had a slower decline in their exposure than smaller banks. Some of the largest sellers of NPL in Europe were banks with headquarters in Greece.

Figures refer to countries participating in the Single Supervisory Mechanism, that is euro area countries, and other EU countries that participate in the mechanism, such as Bulgaria.
