In the financial year 2022/23, almost 11 million hormone replacement therapy (HRT) items were prescribed in England. The number of HRT prescription items dispensed has increased almost year-on-year since 2015. HRT medications are primarily used for treating symptoms of menopause and perimenopause.

Data shows a combination of items dispensed to both identified patients and non-identified patients. An identified patient is one where an item was attributed to a verified NHS number.
HRT items come under the following two British National Formulary (BNF) paragraphs:
6.4.1 - Female sex hormones
7.2.1 - Preparations for vaginal and vulval changes.
