Vehicle fleet in Iceland by fuel type 2013-2022

The vehicle fleet in Iceland in 2022 was still dominated by petrol and diesel vehicles. Respectively these accounted for nearly 160,000 and 128,000 cars. However, the increased uptake of alternative fuel vehicles is beginning to be reflected in the country's automotive fleet. The number of fully electric cars has been growing consistently, and the total number stood at nearly 14,500 vehicles in 2022.

Iceland: A European leader in electric cars

Cars with conventional petrol and diesel engines still vastly outnumber passenger cars with alternative fuel engines in all European countries. However, Iceland is among the continent's leading adopters of electric vehicles. The share of fully electric cars on Iceland's roads was only exceeded by Norway, where 16.2 percent of the passenger car fleet were battery electric cars in 2021. If also counting plug-in hybrids and hybrid electric vehicles, electric cars comprised more than a quarter of the fleet.

Expanding charging infrastructure

A growing network of charging stations supports the growth of the electric car fleet in Iceland. In 2022, the country had over 1,000 charging stations, which is expected to more than double by 2027. The revenue recorded per station is also expected to double during the same period, reaching about 5,000 US dollars in 2027.
