In 2022, the number of nuclear power plants in the United States operating in the regulated market was almost equal to that of plants in the deregulated merchant markets, operated by regional transmission organizations (RTOs) and independent system operators (ISOs). However, there were eight more plants in the regulated market than in the liberalized one. The electricity produced from nuclear plants in U.S. deregulated markets competes with inexpensive electricity from the subsidized wind farms and gas-fired plants, since the monthly price of gas in the U.S. is generally below five U.S. dollars per million British thermal units.
