An estimated 280 billion gallons of freshwater was used daily in the United States in 2015, across a variety of sectors. Surface water accounted for roughly 70 percent of daily freshwater withdrawals in the country, with thermoelectric power the largest consumer of this resource. Irrigation is the second-largest source of surface water use, and the largest source of water use overall.
