Top five most important issues for the EU to address by political ideology in 2022

Across the political spectrum, EU citizens broadly view the inflation/cost of living crisis as the most important issue to be addressed by the European Union in 2022. This is most prevalent in the center of the political spectrum, although all political positions have around a third of respondents listing it as the most pressing issue. Within the top-five issues assessed by EU citizens in 2022, there is consensus from all groups in relation to inflation and the economy, but there are some differences when it comes to the issues of energy supply, global geopolitics, the environment, and immigration.
The far-right stands alone in viewing immigration as one of the five most important issues, whereas all other broad groups included the environment and climate change in their top-five. Energy, the international situation and the economy, all tightly connected with Russia's war in Ukraine, round out the top five issues for 2022. The wish for greater European cooperation on these issues is likely a key driver behind falling levels of euroscepticism in the EU in the early 2020s.
