Syria was the country that received the highest amount of official development assistance (ODA) for humanitarian purposes in 2021, the amount reaching over 1.65 billion U.S. dollars. Afghanistan followed closely behind with over 1.63 billion U.S. dollars. Humanitarian aid is aimed at reducing a humanitarian crisis or to prevent one from unfolding. Other countries on this list, who are experiencing many forms of humanitarian crises, include Yemen, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Some countries receive aid due to natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis, such as Indonesia and Bangladesh, which also hosts many refugees.
