Breaking down the total official development assistance (ODA) distributed from members of the development assistance committee (DAC) in 2021 by region, the highest amount went to social infrastructure projects such as education and health. This was especially the case in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East and North Africa, which received 15.4 billion and 6.6 billion U.S. dollars to this sector. Humanitarian aid also made up a significant amount in these regions. In South and Central Asia the economic infrastructure and services sector and the social infrastructure sector received almost the same amount.

The source adds the following information: 'The sectoral distribution of bilateral ODA commitments refers to the economic sector of destination (i.e. the specific area of the recipient's economic or social structure whose development is, or is intended to be fostered by the aid), rather than to the type of goods or services provided. These are aggregates of individual projects notified under the Creditor Reporting System, supplemented by reporting on the sectoral distribution of technical co-operation, and on actual disbursements of food and emergency aid.'
DAC members: Development Assistance Committee, consisting of 31 member states.
Food aid is also included under program assistance.
