From July through December 2022, Flint's drinking water contained lead contamination levels of 10 parts per billion (ppb). Levels of lead were slightly higher than those recorded in the previous five years, but remained below the legal limit. Levels above 15 ppb require federal action under Michigan's Lead and Copper Rule (LCR). Flint's water systems have met state and federal standards for lead in drinking water since July 2016.
Flint's lead-tainted water crisis began in 2014, when the city switched its water to the Flint River. High concentrations of lead were soon discovered in drinking water, impacting the health of thousands of residents. No level of lead in drinking water is considered safe for humans.
