In 2021, Line Commutated Converters (LCCs) dominated the high voltage direct current (HVDC) market for electric power transmission, accounting for 87 percent worldwide. Cheaper and with a high short circuit capacity, which allows them to transmit electricity at greater voltage and power levels, LCC are more popular in the Americas, in the Asia-Pacific region, and China. However, the Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology is growing due to its application in offshore wind installations.
