While the annual volume of oil produced and consumed has risen by a significant amount since the 1960s, its share of energy production has dropped in virtually all areas - a large part of this is due to rising consumption of natural gas, which is viewed as a cleaner and more efficient fossil fuel, as well as nuclear energy, and the more recent transition to renewable energy sources.
