Brazil: Twitter follower growth for media and political accounts 2022, by category

Between June and December 2022, Twitter accounts of political right-wing media in Brazil grew their follower count by 53.58 percent, while right-wing Brazilian political handles on the platform had an audience increase of around 40.55 percent. On the other hand, Twitter accounts for left-wing politics in Brazil only increased their follower count by 25.28 percent.

This development happened alongside Elon Musk first attempt of terminating the contract of acquiring Twitter in July 2022, but finally closing the deal by the end of October 2022. The billionaire's defense of free speech principles and his suggestions of allowing blocked accounts back to the microblogging platform, like from former United States president Donald Trump, attracted a flock of right-wing audiences, who felt displaced by the content and account moderation of mainstream networks.
