In 2020, the value of road vehicle imports to Iceland fell to its lowest level since 2015, nearly halving from its high point in 2017. Although this coincided with the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, vehicle imports had already been decreasing in the previous two years, tracking Iceland's overall GDP development during this period. In 2021, import values began to rise again and rose even more strongly in the following year, growing to over one billion euros in 2023.
