Iceland's overall CO₂ equivalent emissions from aviation dropped by nearly three quarters at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Iceland's main airport Keflavík serves as a hub for flights between Europe and North America, so the disruption to international travel had a substantial effect on aviation emissions attributed to the country. Following the loosening of travel restrictions, international aviation emissions began to climb again to around 986,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent in 2023.
