OECD countries have made good progress in reducing coal use over the past decade, with coal-fired capacities dropping from 668 GW to 570 GW between 2010 and 2020. It was projected that OECD coal capacity would fall to 391.2 GW by 2030 under a business-as-usual scenario, while the full implementation of Glasgow pledges saw projected coal capacity fall to 345 GW - a reduction of roughly 50 percent, relative to 2010. However, both scenarios still fall well short of being in line with Paris Agreement targets that would require the complete phasing out of coal in the region by 2030.
Coal-fired capacity pathway to carbon neutrality in OECD countries from 2010 to 2050, by scenario

* Historic figures.
From 2025, figures are forecasts based on different scenarios. Pledges refer to projected coal capacity assuming full implementation of COP26 (Glasgow) pledges, while the 1.5 scenario is consistent with IPCC scenarios that limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
