Israel's electric vehicle (EV) market experienced explosive growth in 2023, with the total number of EVs reaching nearly 96,000. This marked a more than twofold increase from the previous year, highlighting the rapid adoption of electric cars in the country. The surge in EVs reflects a broader trend of transportation electrification in Israel, with Chinese manufacturers leading the charge.
Chinese brands dominate the market
Chinese automakers have emerged as the dominant force in Israel's EV landscape. In 2023, BYD claimed the top spot as the most popular EV brand, with over 15,000 new car registrations. Geely and Tesla followed closely, each registering about 7,000 new cars. Despite their incumbent status, Chinese carmakers accounted for 64 percent of all EV imports to Israel that year. This local trend underscores the potential of Chinese auto-firms to disrupt the global automotive industry.
Long-term growth and market dynamics
Looking ahead, Israel's EV market is poised for continued expansion. Forecasts suggest the total number of EVs in the country could surpass 6.4 million by 2050, with the most intense period of growth expected between 2030 and 2040. While EVs are gaining momentum, hybrid vehicles also maintain a strong presence in the Israeli automotive sector. Toyota leads the hybrid market, with nearly 24,000 new registrations in 2023. However, the growth rate of hybrid vehicles has moderated in recent years, while EV sales have accelerated since 2020.
