According to a survey conducted by GEM Partners among non-users of subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services in Japan in November 2022, around 40 percent of the respondents knew about ad-supported plans of SVOD services. Ad-supported plans of SVOD services offer viewers the possibility to watch advertisements before or during the actual content in return for paying a lower fee. The survey showed that the share of people who knew about such plans was higher among SVOD users than among non-users.

Survey respondents were given an overview of the "ad-supported plan" before answering the survey. Ad-supported plans were explained as the following:
Plans that are less expensive compared to those plans without ads but require viewing of ads before or during content viewing.
It was furthermore explained that the question was not about the advertising plan of a specific service, but that the introduction was considered generally for subscription-based video distribution services.
