In 2018, nearly half of unemployed people in French Guiana were in severe poverty. While the level was somewhat lower in the other overseas regions - 27 percent in La Réunion, 26 percent in Guadeloupe, and 22 percent in Martinique - severe poverty was far more prevalent in overseas France than in the metropolitan territory, where less than ten percent of unemployed people were in severe poverty.
Moreover, in the same year, the proportion of people neither in poverty nor in extreme poverty was no more than half of the population in overseas regions, compared to nearly 80 percent in metropolitan France.
