On the other side of the spectrum, buildings certified by Energy Star in Illinois and Washington, D.C. had the lowest energy efficiency scores. New York was among the cities in the U.S. with the most apartments certified by Energy Star.

Over half of the buildings included in the registry received a certificate from Energy Star in more than one occasion. Such buildings are only taken into account once. Only the data from their last certificate was used.
