High-income countries emitted more than 1.1 trillion metric tons of carbon dioxide (GtCO₂) from fossil fuels and industry between 1750 and 2023. This is twice the amount of CO₂ produced by upper-middle-income countries during the same period. Meanwhile, lower-income countries have contributed the least to global historical emissions, at just 10.5 GtCO₂.
Cumulative carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from fossil fuels and industry worldwide from 1750 to 2023, by income group
(in billion metric tons)
Emissions are based on territorial emissions (production-based) and do not account for emissions embedded in trade. This measures CO₂ emissions from fossil fuels and cement production only – land use change is not included.
