According to a 2022 survey conducted in Croatia, almost half of respondents agreed that Croatia was ready to introduce the euro currency. By contrast, less than one-third claimed that the Balkan country was not ready to do so, and around a quarter neither agreeing nor disagreeing.
Croatia entering the Eurozone and the Schengen
As of January 1, 2023, Croatia officially entered the Eurozone and the Schengen area, and introduced the euro as the official currency. The consequences of this decision are debated, with some experts suggesting it will bring economic profit and others arguing that Croatia was not ready. One of the negative effects being debated is the likelihood of price increases on goods due to the conversion.
Impact on the Croatian tourism industry
Croatia is one of the most popular vacation destinations for international tourists, and especially for Europeans, who will now not need to bring their passports and exchange their currency starting. The many tourists who visit Croatia every year will soon be able to pay for their accommodations, food, and experiences in euros, easing their trip and stay in the Balkan country. Indeed, joining the Schengen area and adopting the euro will bring benefits to the Croatian tourism industry, which, as one of the leading industries in the country, is forecast to reach a size of over 900 million euros in 2023.
