Apartment sales volume index in the U.S. 2016-2024, per quarter
The sales volume of apartments in the United States increased in July 2024, according to the National Multifamily Housing Council's (NMHC) market tightness index. The index is a standard diffusion index and is based on a quarterly survey among NMHC members. A value over 50 indicates growing sales volumes, while under 50, it indicates that the market is contracting. In October 2021, the sales volume index reached its peak at 79 index points, meaning that sales volumes had increased the most according to industry experts. In July 2024, the index stood at 57 index points, noting an improvement from the October 2022 dip.
