According to a survey conducted by GEM Partners in Japan in November 2022, more than 60 percent of the respondents were not interested in using a subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service that shows advertisements before or during the actual content in return for a lower fee. While more than a third of the respondents were interested in using ad-supported SVOD services, only about three percent of the respondents directly stated that they wanted to subscribe to such a service.

Survey respondents were given an overview of the "ad-supported plan" before answering the survey. Ad-supported plans were explained as the following:
Plans that are less expensive compared to those plans without ads but require viewing of ads before or during content viewing.
It was furthermore explained that the question was not about the advertising plan of a specific service, but that the introduction was considered generally for subscription-based video distribution services.
