According to a study conducted during the FIFA men's World Cup in Qatar in 2022, Harry Kane was the England player who received the most abuse on Twitter, with 426 abusive tweets being targeted at the England Captain. Mason Mount was subjected to 167 abusive tweets, and Harry McGuire received 152 abusive tweets. Members of England's national team are not the only players of the sport who endure online abuse. During the UEFA women's Euro tournament in July 2022, athletes were subject to many different types of online abuse.

Positive social media posts directed at the England Women's football team were also aplenty during the Women's Euro 2022. Overall, Arsenal and England forward Beth Mead received over eight thousand messages of hope during the competition, and Manchester United's Ella Toone received 7,179 positive social media comments.

Following Argentina's win against France in the FIFA World Cup 2022, Lionel Messi published an Instagram post featuring himself and his teammates celebrating their victory. The image, posted on Messi's official account @leomessi, became the most liked photo on Instagram within one day, racking up a total of over 61 million likes and dethroning long standing champion 'Photo of an Egg'.
