In 2023, a single person household would have to earn over 1,247euros per month in order to be over the poverty threshold in Germany, according to preliminary figures. Since 2007, the amount of money people have to earn to be over the poverty line has increased, due to the fact that the cost of living also increases every year. 2018 was the first year in which a single person had to earn over 1,000 euros in order to be over the poverty risk threshold.

¹ From 2011 onwards, the projection is based on the updated results of the 2011 census; before that, it was based on the 1987 (West) and 1990 (East) census.
² Due to the effects of the changeover to a new sample in the 2016 reporting year and special effects in the context of population development, the comparability of the microcensus results from the 2016 reporting year with previous years is limited.
³ The results of the microcensus from the 2020 survey year onwards are only comparable to a limited extent with previous survey years due to methodological changes. The 2020 survey year is also affected by survey restrictions and should therefore not be used for time comparisons with subsequent years.
