Operative nuclear power capacity in India 2010-2023

The total nuclear power capacity in India peaked at approximately 6.8 gigawatts electric in 2021 through 2023. It increased from four gigawatts electric in 2010, with nuclear capacity additions of roughly one gigawatt electric in 2013, 2016, and 2021.

Nuclear industry growth in India

As of 2023, the nuclear power capacity of India was far from that of the global nuclear leaders, the United States, France, and China, with a capacity of over 60 gigawatts electric. However, as of mid-2022, India was the second leading country based on the number of nuclear reactors under construction worldwide. At the end of 2022, the capacity of nuclear power plants under construction in India amounted to over eight gigawatts electric.

Energy mix of India

Over the last few years, the priority of the Indian government was to satisfy the growing energy demand of the country. In 2021, 90 percent of the primary energy demand of India came from fossil fuels. India was one of the main consumers of coal worldwide. Despite the development of the nuclear energy industry, the nuclear share of India's power was only three percent of the total electricity generated. In November 2022, during the COP27 climate change summit, India laid down a plan to decarbonize its economy, with the goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2070.
