Antibiotics are medications that can kill or hinder the growth of bacteria which can cause infections in people and animals. Antibiotic resistance occurs when there is a mutation in the bacteria's genes, a natural process that can be accelerated with the misuse or excessive use of antibiotics. In 2022, a survey on the topic of resistance to antibiotics revealed that 75 percent of Italians thought that unnecessary use of antibiotics would make them ineffective. This statistic displays the share of people answering correctly when asked if they think that unnecessary use of antibiotics makes them ineffective in Italy in 2022.
