As of the end of the third quarter of 2022, the number of Mir cards issued by banks in Russia amounted to 161 million. That represented an increase of over 47 million cards from 2021. Mir is a Russian card payment system adopted by the Central Bank of Russia in May 2017. It currently serves as an alternative to Visa, MasterCard, and American Express, which suspended operations in Russia following the invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. As of November 2022, Mir cards were accepted to a different extent in eight countries: Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, South Korea, Turkey, Vietnam, and Uzbekistan.
