China is the world's largest source of agricultural greenhouse gases (GHG), emitting 893 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) in 2022. This was an overall decrease of roughly three percent, relative to 1990 levels. By comparison, agricultural GHG emissions in Brazil surged by roughly 79 percent during this period. India has also seen its agriculture emissions rise dramatically since 1990.
Methane is the primary GHG emitted by agricultural processes such as enteric fermentation. Methane is a potent gas, with a global warming potential far greater than carbon dioxide.
