China is the world's largest source of agricultural greenhouse gases (GHG), emitting 885 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) in 2023. This was an overall decrease of roughly four percent, relative to 1990 levels. By comparison, agricultural GHG emissions in Brazil surged by roughly 89 percent during this period. India has also seen its agriculture emissions rise dramatically since 1990.
Methane is the primary GHG emitted by agricultural processes such as enteric fermentation. Methane is a potent gas, with a global warming potential far greater than carbon dioxide.
Annual agriculture sector greenhouse gas emissions in selected countries worldwide from 1990 to 2023
(in million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent)
Agriculture soils, crop residues burning, enteric fermentation, manure management, indirect N₂O emissions from agriculture Figures are the combined totals of CO₂, CH4, and N₂O. Excludes land use change.
