U.S. employees on their Christmas bonus plans 2022

According to a holiday edition of the Statista Global Consumer Survey (GCS), 36 percent of Americans plan to spend their Christmas bonus on buying presents. A slightly smaller share, 33 percent, said they would use it to pay bills or settle debts.

The Christmas bonus, sometimes known as the 13th month salary, is an annual bonus provided by companies to their employees. Amounts may vary widely and are usually dependent upon the good-will of a company to provide the bonus. A plurality of Americans said they expect their bonus to be less than 20 percent of their annual salary.

Bonuses in the U.S.

Christmas bonuses are increasingly common in the United States, though are not guaranteed. Another question in the Statista GCS found that only 10 percent of Americans were certain they would receive a Christmas bonus in 2022, but a further 24 percent indicating it was very likely they would receive one. The Christmas bonus has obvious benefits for employees, but benefits exist for employers as well. Holiday bonuses are said to increase company morale, ease burnout, and increase productivity.
