Many movie fans are familiar with the website Rotten Tomatoes, where we often go to check reviews before watching a movie or TV show. However, a disproportionate number of reviewers have historically identified as male. From 2016 to 2020, there has been a steady increase from 27 percent to 35 percent of reviewers who identify as female. In 2022, the number has dropped slightly so far with 31 percent of reviewers identifying as female compared to 69 percent as male.

This statistic is based on a study which examined 4,000 reviews written by 334 reviewers on the Rotten Tomatoes (RT) website. Reviewers were chosen using systematic random sapling and only U.S. based critics who wrote a minimum of three reviews during January, February, and March 2022 were included in the study. This statistic compares data with figures obtained in 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2016.
