Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and "the spirit of Ukraine" has been chosen as Time's "Person of the Year" in 2022. Editors of the American magazine have given out the annual award since 1927 to individuals or groups deemed to have had the most global influence over the course of the year. The previous year's winner, Elon Musk, was again ranked as a finalist in 2022.
In 2022, the magazine also accorded its "Heroes of the Year" award to the women of Iran for their role in the protests against the state of the country. K-pop girl group BLACKPINK was granted the title of "Entertainer of the year."
Zelenskyy praised for wartime leadership
Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Zelenskyy has won international acclaim for his conduct as a wartime leader. Despite calls for the 44-year-old to leave the country during the initial stages of the invasion, Zelenskyy opted to stay in Kyiv by the side of his defense forces - a decision Time editors cited as fateful toward him receiving the award. With "spirit of Ukraine", the magazine highlighted people said to embody the country's resilience, such as Kyiv Independent editor Olga Rudenko and British combat surgeon David Nott.
Chiefs, milestones, social movements
Past award recipients included an array of world leaders ranging from former German Chancellor Angela Merkel to all but three - Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, and Gerald Ford - U.S. Presidents. Entrepreneurs like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have been allocated the award, as well as activists such as Greta Thunberg. In four instances over the last 12 years, the "Person of the Year" was not a specific individual per se but rather an undefined group of people symbolizing specific historical milestones. This gave way to nominations such as 2011's "The Protester", epitomizing the Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street phenomena, or 2017's "The Silence Breakers", dedicated to those who kicked off the MeToo movement.
