During a 2022 survey conducted in the United Kingdom, it was found that 29 percent of respondents do not have their heating on, or that it was not as hot as they would like, because they cannot afford it. On the contrary, 15 percent of respondents stated that they can afford it, but need to save money for other essentials.
Rising energy prices during the colder winter months
Winter in the United Kingdom, much like the rest of Europe, brings with it months of colder temperatures, dropping to around four degrees on average. If they have not already done so, UK residents will need to keep their houses warm, with most (78 percent) doing so by using gas central heating. However, in 2022, many UK inhabitants are concerned with the increasing prices of heating and electricity, with these concerns expected to last into 2023 too.
Cutting costs to survive inflation in Great Britain
Energy and heating are not the only sectors undergoing price increases. Indeed, inflation hit every sector, from food to fuel to real estate. Particularly, 88 percent of British households saw an increase in food prices, while 77 percent experienced growing fuel costs. To cope with the economic downturn, people are cutting their costs. For instance, over half of them have spent less on non-essentials, while almost half have used less fuel at home. In some cases, British residents have even had to resort to using their savings or borrowing money from family and friends.
