Level of awareness of the term biodiversity Japan 2022, by gender

According to a survey on biodiversity conducted in mid-2022 in Japan, the majority of around 43 percent of both male and female respondents stated to have heard the term biodiversity before but never learned what it actually meant. A higher share of men claimed to know about the subject than women did.
Biodiversity refers to the number and variety of individual species of plants, animals and other organisms that are living within a specific region. Biodiversity is one major goal of environmental protection efforts, as it is almost universally regarded as beneficial to human life. Most threats to biodiversity are caused by humans encroaching on previously uncultivated natural land, either by direct development or indirect effects like pollution.
