In 2021, new crude oil tankers with a carrying capacity of around 15.7 million tons deadweight (DWT) were delivered worldwide. Very large crude carriers (VLCC) accounted for the majority of the total capacity delivered to the market that year. In 2021, 73 crude oil tankers were delivered worldwide, 35 of which were VLCCs.

Panamax refers to a vessel type with a carrying capacity in a range of 50,000 to 80,000 DWT. Aframax refers to a vessel type with a carrying capacity in a range of 80,000 to 120,000 DWT. Suezmax refers to a vessel type with a carrying capacity in a range of 120,000 to 200,000 DWT. VLCC stands for a very large crude carrier, a type of large oil tanker with a carrying capacity in a range from 200 to 320 DWT.
