In 2022, just over 17 percent of people in East Germany were at risk of living in poverty and in West Germany there were 16.7 percent. For West Germany this was one of the highest figures seen since 2005. The statistic compares the share of those at risk of poverty in East and West Germany.

¹ From 2011 onwards, the projection is based on the updated results of the 2011 census; before that, it was based on the 1987 (West) and 1990 (East) census.
² Due to the effects of the changeover to a new sample in the 2016 reporting year and special effects in the context of population development, the comparability of the microcensus results from the 2016 reporting year with previous years is limited.
³ The results of the microcensus from the 2020 survey year onwards are only comparable to a limited extent with previous survey years due to methodological changes. The 2020 survey year is also affected by survey restrictions and should therefore not be used for time comparisons with subsequent years.
