The desire to clean places that cannot be reached during normal cleaning routines was the leading reason for doing deep-cleaning at year-end in Japan, as revealed in a survey conducted in January 2023. Only 3.9 percent named the visit of guests as a reason for doing spring cleaning.
Deep cleaning, known as ōsōji in Japan, commonly occurs in December before the New Year's celebrations.
