Estimated share of global ammonia supply 2050, by type

In 2050, clean ammonia is forecast to account for the largest supply of the chemical. Particularly, green ammonia would represent the highest share, at some 43 percent, whereas blue ammonia is estimated to account for a 27 percent share. Meanwhile, gray ammonia is forecast to constitute the remaining 30 percent of the global ammonia supply in 2050.

Gray ammonia is produced from fossil fuels (mainly natural gas), whereas blue ammonia combines traditional ammonia synthesis with carbon capture and storage. Green ammonia is generated from renewable sources only, such as the electrolysis of water. Both blue and green ammonia are categorized as clean ammonia.
