In 2020, the number of low-emission buses operating on Italian local public transport networks amounted to 4,028 units, a year-on-year increase of around 5.6 percent, mainly thanks to the electric fleet. In recent years the electric and hybrid urban bus fleet has increased considerably, reaching 607 units in 2020, an almost threefold increase compared to 2015.

Electric buses (hybrid or all-wheel drive electric buses, including those powered by hydrogen with fuel cell technology) and gas-powered buses (with bi-fuel gasoline/methane or gasoline/LPG engines) are considered low-emission.
