In 2022, the median debt in collections in the United States was higher in communities of color than in those with a majority white population. However, these figures varied a lot, with certain states like Wyoming and North Dakota where white communities had a much higher amount of delinquent debt. The share of people with debt in collections in the U.S. also showed notable differences from state to state.

The majority white communities category retrieves data from postal codes where at least 60 percent of the residents were white. Communities of color retrieves data from postal codes where at least 60 percent of the residents were not white.
